Wollongong Hospital has been grappling with a series of health and safety concerns, including mold growth and pigeon infestations, which have been linked to severe weather and heavy rain. The older persons' mental health unit was particularly affected, with pigeons and bird lice making it their home. Mold was found in various areas, such as the intensive care unit ward, office, sprinklers, ceilings, and bathroom floors. These issues were not limited to Wollongong Hospital; Shellharbour Hospital also faced problems, including ceiling tiles collapsing and water leaks. However, all these issues have been addressed and repaired, ensuring the safety and comfort of patients and staff. The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District spokeswoman emphasized the seriousness with which they take safety, stating that mold can occur in any complex building and that prompt action is taken to address maintenance and repair issues. She also highlighted the extensive program of clean-up and remediation works that began in December 2025, involving pest control experts and support from the NSW Police. Additional measures, such as bird netting, have been installed to prevent future infestations. Despite the challenges, the hospital is committed to maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and ensuring the well-being of all individuals within its premises.
