A big future title clash could be on the horizon for Vadim Nemkov if he adds the PFL heavyweight belt to his resume.
In the main event of Saturday’s PFL Lyon card at LDLC Arena, Nemkov (18-2) challenges Renan Ferreira (13-4), the 2024 PFL heavyweight season winner, for the reigning title. The matchup airs on ESPN Unlimted. With Francis Ngannou (18-3) waiting for PFL to lock him into a fight before his current deal ends, Nemkov’s victory could open the door to a bout against Ngannou.
“Of course, I think about Francis and the possibility of fighting him,” Nemkov said through an interpreter on MMA Junkie Radio. “If that’s my next fight, then great. It’s really up to PFL to arrange and make it happen.”
Ferreira’s height presents a clear challenge for Nemkov, but the champion-in-waiting outlined how he’s prepared for the test.
“I brought in taller training partners for this camp, and I actually started training for some of them even before when I was an alternate for Francis’ fight,” Nemkov explained. “So, I’ve been sparring with tall opponents for a while. I feel ready.”
Ferreira arrives off a first-round knockout defeat to Ngannou last October. With Ferreira’s fights rarely lasting beyond the opening frame, many expect him to come out aggressive. Yet Nemkov isn’t convinced that a fast start will be his opponent’s default.
“I don’t think he’ll just rush at me,” Nemkov commented on Ferreira. “He knows I’m a veteran. I’m not new to this game. That won’t be to his advantage. The crowd’s energy can be contagious, but both of us are seasoned competitors, so I expect a measured, composed approach from both sides.”
