Embarking on a journey through the Turkana Basin in Northern Kenya, I found myself in a unique situation, combining my passion for fossil hunting with an unexpected companion: the Skoda Enyaq. This all-electric SUV, named after the Irish word for 'kernel', seemed like an odd fit for the rugged terrain and scorching heat of the desert. But, as I soon discovered, it was the perfect vehicle for this adventure.
The Turkana Basin, often referred to as the Cradle of Humankind, is a treasure trove of hominin fossils. The Skoda Enyaq, with its sturdy build and all-wheel drive, proved to be a reliable companion, navigating the challenging terrain with ease. Despite the initial skepticism, the car's performance was impressive, especially in the face of the harsh conditions.
My fossil hunting expedition took me to various locations, each with its own unique challenges and discoveries. The Turkana Basin Institute, established by the renowned palaeoanthropologist Richard Leakey, provided invaluable expertise and resources. One of the highlights of my journey was the discovery of a hippo fossil, which, while not directly linked to human evolution, offered a glimpse into the past. The Skoda Enyaq, with its spacious interior and advanced technology, provided a comfortable base for my exploration, even if it did struggle with the extreme temperatures and the lack of charging infrastructure in the region.
