Being in a band is often compared to a marriage, a union of creative minds. When everyone's on the same page, the music flows effortlessly. But what happens when those pages diverge? While the early days of the Eagles seemed idyllic, one particular album caused guitarist Bernie Leadon to seriously reconsider his commitment.
It's easy to imagine a band's journey as a natural progression, a group of friends organically creating music. However, the Eagles' path was different. They were carefully constructed to achieve mainstream success. Emerging during the rock boom, when the music industry was booming, the Eagles were deliberately crafted to become hitmakers.
Before they even formed, Don Henley and Glenn Frey were seasoned veterans of the California rock scene, having played with Linda Ronstadt. They envisioned a band that blended country, rock, and R&B. At Ronstadt's suggestion, they brought in Leadon, known for his expertise on guitar and banjo. Leadon's experience with Gene Clark of The Byrds and Gram Parsons of The Flying Burrito Brothers gave the band the country-infused sound they were seeking, contributing his songwriting skills to tracks like 'Take It Easy.'
Their debut album was a smash hit, and Leadon's love for country music continued on 'Desperado.' The band was excited about this concept album, but it didn't resonate with audiences, forcing them to re-evaluate their direction.
But here's where it gets controversial... The band's shift towards a more rock-oriented sound with 'On the Border' marked a turning point. They parted ways with producer Glyn Johns and embraced heavier guitars in songs like 'James Dean' and 'Already Gone.' While Frey and Henley thrived creatively, Leadon felt increasingly out of sync.
Leadon admitted in 'History of the Eagles' that he struggled to align with the band's evolving sound. He reflected, "By 'On the Border,' it was difficult to articulate how I thought the music should sound, and I started to wonder that maybe I should go at some point."
The creative tension wasn't lost on the others. Frey acknowledged the friction between Leadon's country influences and the band's rock leanings. The arrival of Don Felder, a friend of Leadon's, brought a new dimension to the band, adding guitar solos that demanded greater precision.
During the recording of 'One Of These Nights,' Leadon attempted to assert his creative vision, even threatening to break Frey's arm to get his song 'I Wish You Peace' included. Henley grew weary of Leadon's actions, stating, "Any success for Leadon was synonymous with selling out. Glenn and I always wanted the band to be a hybrid." The Eagles eventually replaced Leadon with Joe Walsh, but the country guitarist had already begun to feel like an outsider after 'On the Border.'
