Remembering Gaylord Rieta: Entertainer, Martial Arts Sensei, and Hawaiian Icon (2026)

A Life of Entertainment and Martial Arts: Remembering Gaylord Rieta

In the vibrant city of Honolulu, a unique and beloved figure has left an indelible mark on the hearts of many. Gaylord Rieta, a man of diverse passions, has passed on, but his legacy as an entertainer and martial arts master lives on. This story is a tribute to his remarkable life and the impact he had on those around him.

The Entertainer and Sensei

Gaylord Rieta was a man of two extraordinary talents. He captivated audiences with his music and entertained the streets of Waikiki with his guitar and voice. But his passion didn't stop there; he was also a dedicated martial arts instructor, passing on his expertise to eager students.

Karen Roeller, a close friend, describes Gaylord's teaching style as tough yet compassionate. "He pushed us, but always with care. He'd give us the time and space to practice, ensuring we mastered the art without any harm."

A Waikiki Icon

Decades ago, Waikiki was blessed with Gaylord's presence. Roeller recalls, "The moment I heard his voice and saw him strumming, I was hooked. He played the music of my era, the 50s and 60s, and it was like a dream come true."

Vernon Rieta, Gaylord's brother, adds, "Waikiki was his stage, and sharing Hawaiian music was his passion. Being local to Hawaii, it was a part of who he was."

A Universal Love

Gaylord's charm and talent knew no bounds. His brother, Vernon, says, "Everyone adored him."

Rita Yoshitomi, Gaylord's longtime partner, explains how he connected with his fans through music and martial arts. "His love for music and his expertise in martial arts were a unique combination. He learned lion dancing and performed during the Chinese New Year's Parade, and the crowd went wild!"

A New Audience, A New Journey

While Waikiki was his initial stage, health reasons led Gaylord to find a new audience at the Aloha Stadium swap meet. Roeller shares, "He saw some friends playing there and decided to join in. He set up a stall, got a sound system, and soon, he was performing every weekend."

This new chapter in Gaylord's life lasted an impressive 16 years, where he not only performed but also sold his music and booked gigs.

A True Entertainer

Vernon emphasizes, "Gaylord made music his profession. Out of all of us, he was the one who truly lived the life of an entertainer."

Sadly, Gaylord's journey came to an end in November 2025 due to a long illness. However, his friends and family choose to celebrate his life rather than mourn his death.

Rita remembers, "I'll always cherish the fun we had together. He brought joy wherever he went."

Roeller adds, "He made us so happy. We laughed endlessly and enjoyed every moment. I'll miss him dearly, but I know we'll meet again."

Vernon reflects, "I'll always remember him asking about our meals, but it was more than that. He cared about our health and well-being."

A Celebration of Life

Gaylord Rieta's life will be celebrated on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Hawaiian Memorial Park Chapel. A visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m., followed by a celebration of life at 10:30 a.m.

And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about remembering the good times; it's about celebrating the impact Gaylord had on the lives he touched. So, let's raise a toast to Gaylord Rieta, the entertainer, the sensei, and the friend.

But here's where it gets controversial: how do you think we should remember our loved ones? Should we focus on their achievements, their passions, or the impact they had on others? Share your thoughts in the comments; let's keep the conversation going!
