Pokémon fever swept through North Charleston this weekend, drawing a massive crowd of collectors, vendors, and families to a trading card event! The air buzzed with excitement as enthusiasts gathered to celebrate one of the world's most beloved hobbies. But what exactly is driving this resurgence, and why are these cardboard creations commanding such high prices? Let's dive in!
From the early hours, the venue was a hive of activity. Tables overflowed with binders, booster boxes, and rare collectibles as buyers and sellers eagerly engaged. Vendors were thrilled with the turnout, especially considering the location.
"I didn’t expect to see so many people here early, especially in the Charleston area,” shared vendor Jalen Busby, clearly delighted by the enthusiastic response.
But here's where it gets interesting: the Pokémon card market has changed dramatically. Prices have skyrocketed, with some cards now valued in the hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars. It's not just about nostalgia anymore; it's a serious investment for many.
"It is $231 for the booster box. That is $241.24 market. We’re asking $235,” explained vendor Chaz Haggerty, illustrating the real-time pricing strategies that are now commonplace. Collectors are no longer solely focused on the flashiest or rarest cards. Value is determined by a combination of factors: artwork, scarcity, and even age. Some collectors are even shifting their focus away from modern releases altogether.
"That one’s like $4,500 right now,” revealed collector Huddy Huvlow, pointing to a specific card on display. "I’m getting into the older stuff, because with modern stuff, everyone at the tables has the same things.”
Among the most unique items on display were true one-of-a-kind collectibles, including a 35-millimeter film reel from *Pokémon: The First Movie*.
"This last thing I have here is actually a 35-millimeter film reel from Pokémon, the first movie,” Huvlow said. "This is a scene that kind of depicts Mewtwo and all of its clone Pokemon, in the gymnasium before the big battle."
Business was brisk throughout the day. Vendors reported selling a significant portion of their inventory well before the event concluded.
"This was all full earlier today, and we’re almost a third of the way sold — and we’re not even halfway through the show,” Haggerty said.
Haggerty runs his trading business with his son, Chase, who, despite only selling cards for three months, already plays a key role in inventory decisions. "He’s the brains behind where the shift should be in the inventory,” Haggerty said.
As prices fluctuate, vendors say the Pokémon trading card game has effectively created its own economy, blending passion with profit. "It’s a little bit of a hobby and a little bit of a business for everybody,” Busby said.
And this is the part most people miss: Some vendors are even treating the current market slowdown as an opportunity.
"In the Pokémon market, there’s a bit of a dip right now,” Haggerty said. “We’re buying that dip because I think it’ll come back up.”
Beyond the buying and selling, collectors emphasized the community aspect of events like Pokékon Fest, particularly for younger fans.
"A lot of the vendors are giving out free things to kids, which is awesome,” Huvlow said. “It really engages them with this, and that’s fantastic.”
For seasoned collectors and newcomers alike, the advice is simple: enjoy the experience.
"Open the pack. Open the box. See what you get,” Huvlow said. “If you don’t like it, trade it with somebody. Get out here, do some trades, and make it fun.”
