According to recent research, the 'Great Resignation' era is over, and Australians are now embracing long-term job stability. A LinkedIn survey of 2000 individuals revealed a significant shift: 59% plan to stick with their current jobs in 2026, a notable increase from 51% last year.
The reasons behind this trend are multifaceted. Economic uncertainty tops the list, with many feeling hesitant to take the leap into an unpredictable job market. Additionally, a whopping 80% of survey respondents admitted to feeling unprepared for a job search, and over a third expressed concerns about AI's role in hiring processes.
Post-COVID, job hopping saw a surge, but now, it seems workers are opting for familiarity over uncertainty.
"After the 'Great Resignation', we're witnessing the opposite behavior," says Brendan Wong, LinkedIn's career expert. "Australians are job hugging, staying put in roles they might have otherwise left due to the market's uncertainty and competitiveness."
And this is the part most people miss: when 80% feel unprepared for a job hunt, it's no surprise they're choosing the comfort of stability over the risks of change.
But here's a twist: LinkedIn's research also uncovered an interesting insight. Gen Z job seekers, in particular, expressed that AI-led interviews could make them "less nervous." Wong suggests that familiarizing oneself with AI is a smart move, as it's shaping every aspect of the job search process, from role discovery to recruiter screening and interview preparation.
