ESA Unveils Revolutionary Meteosat Third Generation Sounder Images
The European Space Agency (ESA) has unveiled groundbreaking images from the Meteosat Third Generation Sounder satellite, marking a significant leap forward in Earth observation technology. This satellite, known as MTG-S, is set to revolutionize weather forecasting with its advanced hyperspectral sounder, capable of capturing intricate atmospheric data.
MTG-S carries an innovative infrared sounder, the first of its kind in geostationary orbit. This instrument can take detailed hyperspectral soundings of the atmosphere, providing a wealth of information about temperature, humidity, wind patterns, and trace gases. The data is so advanced that ESA describes it as "completely new," promising 3D maps of the atmosphere that will be invaluable for forecasting, especially for rapidly changing weather systems.
"We expect data from this mission to change the way we forecast severe storms over Europe," said Simonetta Cheli, ESA's director of EO programs. "This is a game-changer for meteorologists, climatologists, and the communities and citizens who rely on accurate weather predictions."
MTG-S is part of a larger mission, including an imager (MTG-I) launched in December 2022, with a second imager expected to follow in 2026. The project is a collaborative effort involving Thales Alenia Space as the prime contractor, OHB Systems for MTG-S, and Eumetsat for mission control and data distribution.
Canada's Contribution
Canada, an associate member of ESA, has made a substantial commitment to the agency's budget. The Canadian government contributed €407.7 million (approximately CAD $664.6 million) to ESA's record €22.3 billion budget for the next three years, with a significant increase in funding announced at the Space Canada SpaceBound conference in November. ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher described this commitment as "four times as much" and a "very significant contribution."
As a result of this commitment, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) will gain enhanced access to ESA programs, including potential collaboration opportunities with MTG. While Canada operates its own Earth Observation (EO) satellites like RADARSAT 2 and the RADARSAT Constellation Mission, MTG's unique capabilities offer complementary data that can enhance these existing programs.
The First Images
The satellite captured its first images on November 15, 2025, from geostationary orbit at an altitude of approximately 36,000 kilometers above Earth. These images provide a detailed view of the planet, showcasing various atmospheric phenomena:
- Temperature Map: This image reveals surface temperatures in the infrared spectrum, with warmer areas in Africa and South America appearing as dark red. Cooler regions, often found on cloud tops, are depicted in blue.
- Humidity Map: Medium-wave infrared imagery highlights humidity levels, with blue representing high humidity in regions like the high latitudes and the east of Africa, and red indicating low humidity in the Sahara Desert and the Middle East.
- Volcano Eruption Analysis: The satellite's data was instrumental in tracking the eruption of Ethiopia's Hayli Gubbi volcano on November 23. The images showed surface temperature changes and the developing ash plume, demonstrating the satellite's ability to provide timely and accurate observations.
These images and animations, generated using data from the MTG-Sounder's Infrared Sounder instrument, offer a glimpse into the future of weather forecasting, where detailed atmospheric maps will become increasingly crucial for public safety and scientific research.
