Emptiness, the Belgian extreme metal band, has always been known for its visceral and dissonant sound, evoking feelings of existential dysphoria. Their latest album, Nowhere Speaks, continues this tradition, but with a twist. The album is a self-referential horror, a mirror to their previous works, and a testament to the band's unwavering commitment to their unique vision. What makes Nowhere Speaks particularly fascinating is the way it reconstructs Emptiness' elements in both familiar and unfamiliar ways, creating a sound that is both innovative and deeply rooted in their past.
One thing that immediately stands out is the album's structure. It begins with a riff from Nothing But The Whole's closer, 'Lowland', and ends with a similar abruptness, creating a circularity that connects the two albums over a decade apart. This is a clever move, as it provides a sense of closure to the former record, even as it perpetuates the unsettled and unsettling sempiternality of Nowhere Speaks. The album's construction is also a metaphor for its sound, which reconstructs many of Emptiness' elements in both familiar and unfamiliar ways.
The album's sound is characterized by its dark melodies and restlessly stalking tempos. The music's atmosphere incarnates as disso-death moodiness, noisy atmo-black, and warped, static-scattered ambience. The tremolos often feel almost warm, but they can also be unsettling, creating an eerie tone throughout. The highest points are the culmination of these apparent inconsistencies, some new genre Emptiness have been crafting all this time—a pared-back blackened-death, dark ambient, groovy, and dissonant.
However, the album's nuances and unusual textures sometimes veer towards a mélange that's too understated. While Emptiness have absolutely nailed the vibe, much of Nowhere Speaks does capitalize on the magical combination of pseudo-dissonant guitar, smothering dark ambience, and unusual compositional shapes. The myriad interludes, some of which are excellent in their own right, can be a bit overwhelming at times.
In my opinion, Nowhere Speaks is a testament to the band's belief in the virtue of patience. It may have taken many listens, but I'm now so immersed in the void of beautiful nothingness Emptiness have created, that it's hard to remember I ever really had my doubts. The album is a masterpiece of extreme metal, and a must-listen for fans of the genre. It may have taken many listens, but it's worth it, as it spreads out like a great gulf of nothing.
