The Cincinnati Reds are facing a looming challenge that could impact their future: the uncertainty surrounding catcher Tyler Stephenson. With Stephenson's free agency approaching in 2026, the team must make critical decisions about their catching position. But here's where it gets controversial... can they find a suitable replacement?
Stephenson, a player who has shown flashes of brilliance, has also struggled at times. His performance has been inconsistent, with impressive offensive stats in some seasons (like a 134 wRC+ in 2022) and less impressive ones in others (85 wRC+ in 2023). This inconsistency, combined with his varying defensive metrics (ranging from excellent blocking to less-than-stellar framing), makes a long-term contract extension a risky proposition. On the other hand, relying on veteran Jose Trevino, who will be 34 years old, to take over the starting role might not be the best solution either.
The Reds' options are limited, and the likelihood of a trade seems to be dwindling. Every day that passes without an extension for Stephenson, it becomes increasingly clear that he may not be the catcher of the future.
Luckily, there might be a potential solution in their top prospect, Alfredo Duno... but there's a catch. Duno, a promising 20-year-old, needs to make a significant leap in the upcoming season.
Are the Reds putting too much faith in Alfredo Duno?
For those unfamiliar with Duno, he's a teenager who has shown remarkable potential, boasting a .948 OPS and a 163 wRC+ in 2025. His offensive abilities are impressive, with 18 home runs and six stolen bases in 113 games this year.
But this is the part most people miss... There are questions about Duno's ability to remain at the catcher position long-term. While scouts praise his strong throwing arm, concerns have been raised about his size (6'2, 210 lbs) and his pop time (the time it takes for a catcher to throw the ball to second base to try to throw out a runner).
Considering the Reds' excellent starting rotation, they need a catcher who can handle the defensive demands of the position. Duno hasn't even played at High-A Dayton yet. Can he answer these questions while rising through the minor leagues by 2026?
Trevino's presence is important here. He's under contract for two more seasons with a club option for 2028. He's not the defensive wizard he once was, but his experience (Gold Glove in 2022) and ability to call a good game could be crucial if Duno is indeed the primary plan at catcher.
Asking a 20-year-old catcher to go from Single-A to the major leagues is a difficult task, as catchers typically take longer to develop. While Duno has immense potential, he may not be ready for the big leagues by 2027. Trevino shouldn't be asked to handle a starter's workload if Duno isn't ready.
To be clear, there's still time to find a solution to bridge the gap between Stephenson and Duno. But this is a significant challenge that the Reds need to address.
